Meet William Hartmann, the General Manager of One Steamboat Place in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

William joined the Timbers team at One Steamboat Place in November 2022 from Florida and has worked at esteemed properties and brands throughout the United States and the Bahamas during his career.

Get to know William, his career path, and his favorite part of the Timbers Company team below!

What inspired you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry and how did you get started before coming into your current role as General Manager of One Steamboat Place?

I was in my second year of college, studying Business Administration and I was a bit bored with the subject matter. I had no idea of how I would apply my education to real life once I graduated. My sister happened to mention that in an article that she was reading about Las Vegas, it said that they had a College of Hotel and Restaurant Administration at UNLV. I had never heard of this discipline before, but it sounded exciting. A few months later I went out and checked out the campus and that was it. I was hooked. It just felt like what I was supposed to do. I was very lucky to have worked for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts for 15 years early in my career and that really set the tone for me regarding how things should be done in the hospitality business. I am very grateful to the many mentors that have helped me to get to where I am now.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face as General Manager and what is your favorite part of your role?

As with all businesses nowadays, one of our biggest challenges is finding good people to hire. I feel very blessed that somehow, we have been able to pick the cream of the crop in Steamboat Springs. Even though we could always use another set of hands, the team that we have at OSP always pulls together to get the job done and always with a smile on every face. My favorite part of my role is rolling up my sleeves and working one-on-one with the team to accomplish whatever needs to be done on a given day. I am definitely not a “sit behind the desk” guy. I need action!

What do you like most about working at Timbers?

Every member of the Timbers Family that I have come in contact with lives our core values every single day. Timbers has done an incredible job of building and maintaining a caring, supportive culture for our team members, our Owners, Members, and guests. Here at OSP, we live the “culture of Absolutely”. I must hear that word 100 times every day. Whether it’s a team member speaking with an owner or two team members working to get a task done, every time I hear it, I smile. I truly appreciate that the team at Timbers corporate is supportive and caring, without micromanaging.

Tell us about a memorable special moment or experience from the past year that happened at One Steamboat Place.

Our daily Après Ski here at OSP is legendary. This year we added live entertainment on some days, put on trunk shows and art displays with local craftsmen and craftswomen, and had some of our talented team members mix up some delicious specialty cocktails on a few of the holiday dates. Local legend and Olympic Ski Champion, Billy Kidd also stopped by a few times to shake hands and sign autographs, which was obviously a big thrill for our owners and guests.

Is there a hidden gem in Steamboat Springs that you or your team always recommend?

There are so many great restaurants, bars and other fun and interesting things to do in Steamboat Springs it’s hard to narrow it down, but something very cool to do on a non-ski day is dog sledding. There are two or three companies in town that will take you out for a half or full-day adventure that you’ll definitely be telling your friends back home about for a long, long time.

What is a fun fact about you that people would be surprised to learn?

I was born in Japan.

Thank you, William, for sharing more about you, your role, and the amazing team at One Steamboat Place, a Timbers Residence Club.
